PHIL Award Winner
October 2011
As a patient advocate, Becky inspires confidence and trust to patients and
families at Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. She showed great concern
for a 16-month-old patient who presented to the PICU as "most challenging",
fearful and uncooperative. Becky took the time to explain the importance of
doing a good treatment to the patient's mother. Her mild manner, friendly
nature and display of competence put the mother at ease. Becky took the time
to comfort the patient and made a bad situation into a tolerable one.

She has been know to frequently take the time to stop and explain medical
terms and therapies to patients in a way that they can understand. One of the
families of a patient in the NICU referred to her as "Aunt Becky" because she
displayed the poise and outward trust that makes families comfortable. Many
parents recognize her approach and request her as caregiver for their child.
She is a great example of what a respiratory therapists at Rainbow represents
in the care of patients and families.

Rebecca Richards has been a registered respiratory therapist for 10 years and
has been at Rainbow since 2005. She became a neonatal pediatric specialist
in 2008 and has been a strong ICU therapist and a great patient advocate.
