PHIL Award Winner
October 2012
Karen Kirtley-Yundt is the 2012 PHIL Award recipient at McLaren Northern Michigan
Hospital. She is a respiratory therapist and oversees the pulmonary rehab program.
Karen was nominated by a host of individuals - 14 in all, including patients,
physicians, and colleagues - for going over and above what’s required for patient
care. Many of her rehab patients, as well as physicians, stated that Karen does an
excellent job of keeping her patients out of the hospital.
Karen is also only one of three recipients to ever receive the Angel Award from the
McLaren Northern Michigan Foundation for outstanding patient care. This award is
donated by a patient.
Karen has been a respiratory therapist since 1992. She graduated from Bowling
Green State University in Ohio with a major in Respiratory Care. She has held many
roles as a respiratory therapist including Neonatal Instructor, Charge Therapist, Lead
Therapist, and Pulmonary Rehab Coordinator. Karen is a member of the AARC and
the MSRC and holds Respiratory Licenses in Michigan and Ohio. Karen joined the
staff at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in April 2008, and has enjoyed working
with the patients, staff, and physicians. Karen states, “It was the beauty of the
surroundings and the hospital view of the bay that first attracted me here, and the
friendly staff clinched the deal.”
