This presentation will introduce the audience to the newer field of interventional
pulmonary. It will provide a general overview of airway stents and indications for
their use; explore bronchial thermoplasty in the treatment of severe asthma; and
describe modalities for managing endobronchial tumors with the use of rigid
bronchoscopy, electrocautery, and cryotherapy. The discussion will also focus on
newer, minimally invasive techniques for the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer,
including the use of ultrasound and electromagnetic navigational bronchoscopy.
Dr. Swarup was raised near Grand Rapids, MI and attended Grand Valley State
University. In 2004, he received his medical degree from the Saba University School
of Medicine, Netherland Antilles. After completing his internal medicine residency at
St. Joseph Mercy Hospital – Ann Arbor, including a year as Chief Resident, he
completed specialty training for Pulmonary and Critical Care at Henry Ford Hospital
in 2011. Dr. Swarup’s clinical interests include advanced diagnostic bronchoscopy
using endobronchial ultrasound and electromagnetic navigation. Dr. Swarup is
board certified in internal, critical care and pulmonary medicine.
